Nearly 70-Year-Old Facility Needs Major Overhaul

*COLDWATER, Mich.* — Coldwater Community Schools is asking voters to approve a $64 million bond proposal that would transform their aging high school into a modern learning facility. The nearly 70-year-old building is showing its age, and the district says it no longer meets today's educational, accessibility, or safety standards.

"We need the spaces that will accommodate that," said Paul Flynn, superintendent of Coldwater Community Schools. "Education has become a lot more collaborative and a lot more sharing of ideas."

The proposed bond would fund a two-story, 62,000-square-foot learning wing featuring new science labs, classrooms, and support spaces with full Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility. The new wing would also include improved ventilation and thermal comfort.

Buckets Coming Out During Rain

Flynn said the age of the facility is clear in the classrooms, which are no longer meeting current educational standards. The school has tried to make improvements over the years with a couple of additions, but the overall quality of the building is starting to show.

"When we get rain, the buckets come out," Flynn said. "And that's not good for anybody."

The bond proposal would also address the school's aging mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Funding would improve flooring, lighting, painting, casework, and leaky ceilings.

Perhaps most critically, Coldwater High School is currently the only building in the district without central air conditioning, according to Flynn. The bond would dedicate money to upgrading the HVAC system throughout the facility.

Modern Learning Spaces Needed

Flynn explained that modern education requires collaborative spaces where students can share ideas and work together. The current facility cannot accommodate these new learning models.

The proposed bond would also fund a flexible, student-centered media center for collaboration, research, and study. This would provide students with the tools they need to succeed in today's educational environment.

When Will Voters Decide?

The bond proposal is expected to go before voters on Election Day in May 2026. This is part of a larger wave of school bond proposals across Michigan as districts seek to modernize aging facilities.

Coldwater Community Schools has been working withTMP Architecture to design the new wing. The project represents a significant investment in the district's future, with hopes of creating a learning environment that can compete with top schools in the state.

Community Impact

Coldwater is a small community in Van Buren County, and the high school serves as a central hub for local students. The aging facility has been a concern for parents and educators for years, and this bond proposal offers a path forward.

The $64 million investment would not only upgrade the physical building but also improve the educational experience for students. Modern facilities with proper ventilation, adequate lighting, and collaborative spaces are essential for student success in today's educational environment.

Next Steps

Coldwater Community Schools is holding public meetings to inform voters about the bond proposal. The district encourages families to learn about what the money would fund and how it would benefit their children.

Election day for Bond and Charter Proposals is May 2, 2026. Voters will have the opportunity to decide whether to approve this investment in their school's future.
